Plot

The Way Way Back’s storyline revolves around a 14 years old introvert boy named Duncan, from Albany, New York, who reluctantly goes on a summer vacation with his mother Pam, played by Toni Collette, her wealthy boyfriend Trent, played by Steve Carell, and his arrogant daughter Steph, played by Zoe Levin. Trent emotionally tortures Duncan by belittling him and making comments and gestures that are condescending and rude. On their way to a beach house, Trent asks Duncan to rate himself, when he says that he thinks he is a six, Trent tells him that he is more of a three. When they arrive at the beach house, they meet their neighbors, the hard drinking Betty, played by Alison Janney, her children Susanna and Peter, played by Anna Sophia Robb and River Alexander respectively, and a married couple, Kip and Joan, played by Rob Corddry and Amanda Peet Respectively.

Later, Duncan finds a little girl’s bicycle in the garage and uses it to explore the town. He then runs into the staff of Water Wizz, the local water park, at a restaurant. There he meets Owen, played by Sam Rockwell, who is playing Pac Man and he eventually takes Duncan under his wing. After Owen takes him to the park, he meets the park’s fun employees, Caitlin, Lewis, and Roddy, played by Maya Rudolph, Jim Rash, and Nat Faxon. There he learns of an ongoing myth of a legendary pass in the tube slide, trying to figure out how it can be done. Owen then hires Duncan at the park.

Duncan’s home life continues to be a nightmare, where his mother seems to be more interested in smoking marijuana with other adults than in her own son. At a Fourth of July cookout, Susanna sees how upset he is and invites him to go hunting for ghost crabs with her and Peter. Later that night, Duncan sees Trent and Joan kissing, but he does not say anything. Later he confronts Pam in front of friends and neighbors and tells her about the affair and that she should get rid of Trent. After which, Trent tells him that no one, including his own father, wants him, and Duncan walks away. When Susanna follows and comforts him, he tries to kiss her, but she moves away, which makes him even more upset. Then Duncan and Peter sneak off to the park for Lewis’ going away party.

When Duncan refuses to leave the park the next morning, Owen asks him what’s wrong. He then tells Owen everything about his home life and that the park is the only place where he feels happy and accepted. Owen then sympathizes with him and advises him to disregard Trent’s criticism and go his own way. When he goes back home, he learns that they are leaving, and Betty and her kids come to say goodbye, and Susanna kisses him. Later, when Trent stops for gas he jumps out of the car and runs to the park, followed by his mother, Trent, and Steph. When he arrives at the park, he tells Owen that he has to leave and proceeds to successfully pull of the legendary pass in the tube slide. Duncan then introduces Owen to his mother, and Owen introduces himself to Trent as “a good friend of the three”. While leaving, Duncan thanks Owen “for Everything”.

The movie was filmed in America. It was park was filmed in the beautiful location of 3031 Cranberry Hwy, Massachusetts, USA. The movie was mainly filmed in Massachusetts. The primary cities that could be seen in the film were Marshfield, Wareham, and Powder Point bridge. The movie was being made on the South Shore. Some scenes were also shot at Wareham’s Water Wizz, Duxbury’s Powder Point Bridge, and green Harbor’s Beach. Driving sequences were shot in Pembroke. Green Harbor is a beautiful location for filming. And that they had a lot of fun, a lot of barbeques and cookouts, and that they would hang out on the beach at night.
