Besides having the cleverest name ever, Under Pressure Espresso Bar has the best coffee and pastries ever! What’s the secret? The finest quality coffee beans are roasted on-site creating an intoxicating aroma that you’ll enjoy in dozens of ways in their lovely shop, or at home. Flaky, traditional pastries are imported from Greece in a raw state, then baked on site for hot, homemade goodness that you can’t find anywhere else…but Greece!
Under Pressure Espresso Bar opened in June 2019 and is the brainchild of Mike Papadopoulos, with a background in restaurant design, and George Monogioudis, professional coffee roaster. Their combination of talents resulted in a beautiful coffee bar with a modern, ecologically friendly design that just feels good. Despite the name, Under Pressure Espresso Bar is a very relaxing place, with plenty of tables outside in the sun, just down the street from St. Demetrios Church. This is a nice spot to linger with your favorite coffee drink or tea and some snacks.
Starting with coffee, choose among espresso and macchiato, latte, flat white, café au lait, cold brew, Greek frappe, hot chocolate, and frozen hot chocolate. Bulletproof coffee is brewed straight up or scented with cinnamon or cocoa for extra aroma. Matcha is all the rage and UP has hot and iced matcha flavors as well as a variety of teas such as jasmine, English breakfast tea, and chai latte; all beverages are made to order with pride by friendly baristas. There’s even freshly squeezed orange juice and smoothies made with grass-fed yogurt and fresh fruit.
Accompany your beverage with some savory snacks such as rustic spinach pie from Greece, made “village” style with handmade crust, not phyllo dough, so it’s light and crispy, chock full of fresh spinach and chunks of creamy feta cheese. There is a vegan version as well without cheese and a traditional Greek bagel-type bread called koulouri which is thinner and lighter than our bagels. These delectable rings are filled with either cheese or olives and tomato, topped with sesame seeds and baked to a golden, crispy finish which I loved. Take some home for breakfast, or an anytime snack. The same is true for Greek-style “toast” which is white or wheat bread filled with ham and cheese or turkey and cheese, then lightly toasted for a crisp, satisfying, hand-held snack that goes well with an iced coffee or frappe. If you have a sweet tooth, try bugatsa, custardfilled phyllo pastry that’s delicious and not overly sweet, with or without a dusting of powdered sugar as you like. Cookies and praline parfaits and chocolate and vanilla mini cakes are almost too pretty to eat. French-style macarons are colorful confections that melt in your mouth. There’s also a cart of “Jane’s handmade ice cream” with all-natural ingredients to enjoy.
Coffees from countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Guatemala, and others are available in brown paper bags, ready to take home to your coffee maker. Wholesale and corporate accounts are welcome too. They’re open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, and from 8am to 8pm on Sundays.
Come visit, order your coffee, tea, or smoothie and a snack and relax in the sun or in the shade at Under Pressure Espresso Bar!
