Anyone else eyeing up cropped trench coats? While the longer versions still feel on-point (arguably — they’re classics anyway), the cropped version definitely has a role to play. A cropped trench has an almost gamine feel to it; the vibe is a little more playful than the standard trench.
Cropped trench coats look especially good with big pants too, so if anyone has been playing around with baggy, oversized, or even full-length jeans and/or trousers, a cropped trench is solid add.
And I’ve talked before about cropped silhouettes being my first choice for warming up all kinds of dresses. Whether mini, midi or maxi, fitted or loose, a cropped jacket almost always is the best choice.
Not only do I keep eyeing up cropped trench coats (I have several in my cart as I type this), but we’ve received several reader questions about ’em as well, so I figured it was time for a roundup!
That said…anytime there’s a trending piece that also happens to be practical & easy to wear, it’s trouble: The good ones keep selling out.
The below selection of cropped trenches is a mix of affordable & bananas, but it’s helpful to see the pricier coats to get a better idea of the overall look we’re going for.

1. Anthropologie Cropped Trench Jacket
After looking at both the affordable cropped trenches and the designer ones…this Anthropologie trench jacket is my top pick. Seriously, you can just stop here. It’s the most affordable option that nails the designer vibe and comes in regular, petite and plus sizes. At $148 it’s not cheap, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anything better under $500. (Also in Mint, which is a fun twist.)
2. Lauren Ralph Lauren Double-Breasted Water-Resistant Trench
That said, Ralph Lauren’s cropped trench is another solid option. It’s selling fast, though, thanks to its French-girl vibes and practical, water-resistant fabric.
3. Everlane The Organic Cotton Herringbone Jacket
While not technically a *cropped* trench, I had an old iteration of Everlane’s swingy trench, and the shape definitely reads more like a cropped trench than a standard one when worn.
4. Acne Studios Belted Button-Up Jacket
If you’re looking to make your cropped trench into a forever piece…THIS ONE. Acme Studios’ Belted Button-Up Jacket is pricey but ridiculously gorgeous. The type of statement jacket that is too cool to ever go out of style. I mean…the collar, the reddish buttons, the leather-wrapped hardware? Oof. So good.
5. TWP Bogie High-Low Cotton-Blend Trench Coat
This TWP (named after designer Trish Wescoat Pound, who also founded Haute Hippie) high-low trench coat is made in NY with fabric sourced in Italy…which helps to explain the price. I appreciate that this trench gets alllllll the details exactly right (check out the back!!). It’s the kind of piece that’s likely even better in person. Another solid option if you’re looking for a forever piece.
6. Closed Cropped Trench Jacket
Closed is a German brand that’s one of the few Good On You has rated “good” for sustainability. The lines in this cropped trench jacket are freaking fantastic, and I love that the extra room means you can easily layer — without sacrificing style. Another pricey option, but would, yet again, make a solid investment piece.
7. Veronica Beard Watts Dickey Short Coat
Saks Fifth Avenue
OK! This Veronica Beard short coat is the last bananas-expensive one, I promise! I only included pricey pieces that had something really special to offer, and in this case…it’s the back. In addition to the bright-yellow pops of color you see here, the back is also bright yellow. The whole thing is really cheery and fun and special. Classic enough to be a forever piece, but too interesting to ever be boring.
8. Banana Republic Vivienne Linen Trench Jacket
Banana Republic’s cropped trench jacket is linen, so less of a rain jacket and more of a style statement piece. I’d layer this trench over a dress or wear it to work. Would be such a star with even just jeans and black sandals.
9. J.Crew Cropped Lady Trench Coat
I was worried that this one was all fancy, less function, but no: J.Crew’s cropped trench coat is made from a water-resistant fabric, making it a functional trench coat in a fresh new shape. Like most J.Crew clothing (cue the applause), this trench is available in plus sizes too. I LOVE the swingy back.
Tell me: Did I miss any good ones?
