ORIGIN Burt Reynolds was an American actor, television producer, and director. His standout film projects include Deliverance (1972), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), The Cannonball Run (1981), and Boogie Nights (1997). He held prominent roles in television shows like Riverboat, Gunsmoke, Hawk, Dan August, and Evening Shade. Reynolds was born Burton Leon Reynolds Jr. on February 11, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan. His father, Burton Milo Reynolds (d. 2002), was a police chief, and his mother, Fern H. Miller (d. 1992), was a nurse. He had a sister, Nancy, and an adopted brother, Jimmy. The family moved to Florida in 1946. Reynolds attended Palm Beach High School followed by Florida State University. He was a standout football player but a knee injury ended his career.

CAREER Reynolds got into acting while taking classes at Palm Beach Junior College. He was cast in the lead for the play ‘Outward Bound’ produced by Watson B. Duncan III. That performance earned him the 1956 Florida State Drama Award. The award included a scholarship to the Hyde Park Playhouse. Reynolds made his Broadway debut in a 1961 production of Look, We’ve Come Through. His stage credits also include Tea and Sympathy, and Mister Roberts. Reynolds began appearing on television shows in the late 1950s. His early television credits include Flight, Playhouse 90, The Blue Angels, and The Aquanauts. He appeared opposite Darren McGavin in the NBC western series Riverboat (1959-60). His film debut was the drama Angel Baby (1961) starring George Hamilton and Mercedes McCambridge.

Reynolds starred as “Quint Asper” in the western drama series Gunsmoke (1962-65). He starred as “John Hawk” in Hawk (1966), as “Dan August” in ABC’s Dan August (1970-71), and as “Wood Newton” in CBS’ Evening Shade (1990-94). He voiced the character “Troy Garland” for the syndicated fantasy sitcom Out of This World (1987-91). He was a regular guest on Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show. Reynolds’ breakout film was the thriller Deliverance (1972) opposite Jon Voight. He followed up with leading roles in The Longest Yard (1974), Semi-Tough (1977), and Hooper (1978). Reynolds starred as “Bo Darville” in Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and two sequels. He picked up an Oscar nomination for best-supporting actor for the film Boogie Nights (1997). His film credits also include The Cannonball Run (1981) with Roger Moore, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) with Dolly Parton, and Bean (1997) with Rowan Atkinson.

PERSONAL Burt Reynolds died on September 6, 2018, at the age of 82. He had been battling heart problems for several years prior. His reported cause of death was cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead at the Jupiter Medical Center in Florida. Reynolds was married to his first wife ‘Judy Carne’ from 1963 to 1965. He dated singer Dinah Shore and actress Sally Field. His second wife was actress Loni Anderson. The two adopted a son, Quinton, in 1988. Their marriage ended in divorce in June 1994. Reynolds was 5ft 11in tall and he was of Dutch, English, Scottish, Irish and Italian descent. He had an estimated net worth of $3 million. The actor filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1996. He recovered after two years.
