Hall des Lumières will use advanced and unique technology to create immersive exhibitions dedicated to some of the most celebrated figures in art history.
The exhibitions are accessible to all generations and will be designed to complement the venue’s interiors of marble, columns, bank tellers, stained glass windows and sculptures to enhance the unique multi-sensory experience.
Atelier des Lumières in Paris has attracted more than three million visitors in less than three years to experience digitised works of art from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Leonardo da Vinci, Claude Monet and Gustav Klimt. The recently opened ‘Bassins de Lumières’ in Bordeaux has welcomed more than 300,000 visitors in the first three months.
Above is a before and after comparison of the space located at 49 Chambers Street. The exhibition loop will reminisce on the buildings historic past as the former Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, with a duration of one-hour and fifteen-minutes. This film will feature Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist and architect who incorporated elements of surrealism and ornamentation in his work, as well as a feature on the history of the Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank, a Beaux-Arts structure built between 1909 and 1912 that was, for a time, the largest bank building in the U.S.
The historic image above, and the images below are a few images we found on the NYC Landmark Preservation Commission site regarding Hall des Lumières’ and proposed modifications in their meeting with the Commission in May, 2020.
The inaugural exhibition in the historic space will be dedicated to Gustav Klimt, with a new digital art experience every ten to twelve months. The inaugural experience will feature thirty-foot images of Klimt’s most famous paintings, along with reproductions of works and information about the museums they call home.
Hall des Lumières is organized by Culturespaces artistic director Gianfranco Iannuzzi and IMG. IMG is no stranger to large-scale events, as a division of the huge conglomerate ‘Endeavor’, with its 70% stake in Frieze Art Fair.
The renovation will be undertaken by the architects Woods Bagot, along side historic preservation specialists Higgins Quasebarth & Partners.
Hall des Lumières will open its doors a 49 Chambers Street in Tribeca, across from City Hall, with an opening date of September 14, 2022.
